Hi everyone- Our last "BCMFest 2009 spotlight" feature, followed by a couple of news/updates: Keeping It Fresh New acts enliven BCMFest 2009 The Boston Celtic Music Fest is always happy to welcome new acts to the stage, and the sixth annual BCMFest – which takes place Jan. 9-10, 2009, at venues in Harvard Square and Medford – will have plenty of bands that have emerged on the local scene during this past year. Some represent new collaborations for old friends. A case in point is Long Time Courting, whose members – Shannon Heaton, Ellery Klein, Liz Simmons and Ariel Friedman – all have played at BCMFest in previous years and have been involved with various other musical affiliations. The band debuted last fall (one of its first concerts was at the BCMFest “Celtic Music Monday” October show), and BCMFest is delighted to present thei r blend of masterful singing and equally impressive instrumental work. Other acts, while still in their infancy, are no strangers to BCMFest. The Bridgebuilders – who play a high-energy mix of Celtic, folk rock, funk and punk – and Matching Orange, an up-and-coming band with a particular interest in contra dance music, performed to a capacity crowd at the July BCMFest “Celtic Music Monday” show in Club Passim. Contra dance music – which has considerable Celtic influences – also is the focus of Nor’Easter, whose members (all regulars on the New England contra circuit) joined forces last spring. The quartet Fireside originated at a 2007 fiddle camp in Maine, and over the course of 2008 began to fully develop their sound, combining old-time, Scandinavian, Quebecois, bluegrass and contemporary folk an d acoustic music with Celtic roots. Berklee College of Music was the incubator for the Folk Arts Quartet, whose members (all Berklee students, hailing from Scotland, Canada, Massachusetts, and Utah) bring a string-quartet dynamic to their interpretations of American and Celtic music styles. Information on these and other performers is available at bcmfest.com ALSO: *Slots are still available for the BCMFest Performer Make-over on Saturday, at 11 a.m. at the Sanctuary Stage in First Parish of Cambridge Church. If you're getting ready to play out in public, or you just want some tips on becoming a more successful performer, this is the place to be. Plus: the top three acts at this event will be invited to play at the BCMFest 2010 "New Bands on the Block" feature.
